As always, I received an excellent cleaning from Hygienist, Jessica Ross, along with a thorough explanation of anything she observes. In addition to her dental care proficiency, her wonderful good nature and humor make my visit enjoyable and constructive.

I was able to get an appointment the same week even though they’re super busy. Selda did my dental cleaning and did an excellent job. I had a ton of staining from coffee that she took the extra time to completely get rid of! She had an excellent bedside manner and didn’t rush through things. They have an orthodontist that works there on Mondays too which is nice. They accept most insurance companies too. I was able to add on a fluoride treatment for $45 (insurance doesn’t cover this) to further protect my teeth too. Will continue to come back!

Friendly and knowledgeable staff explained all of the procedures and steps. The attending Doctor was professional, kind, and patient given dentists are most certainly not in my comfort zone. Would highly recommend across the board.

What is Oral Cancer Screening?

At Gentle Dental, we provide comprehensive oral cancer screening in Boston to help detect early signs of oral cancer before symptoms become serious.

This quick, non-invasive exam is typically performed during your regular dental check-up and focuses on identifying abnormal tissues or lesions in the mouth, tongue, throat, and lips.

Our experienced dental team uses visual and tactile techniques to look for any changes that may require further evaluation. By offering oral cancer screening that Boston patients can trust, we aim to support early detection and improve outcomes through timely intervention.

Why Should I Get an Oral Cancer Screening?

Getting an oral cancer screening in Boston at Gentle Dental is a proactive step toward protecting your health. Oral cancer can develop without obvious symptoms, making early detection critical. Screenings help identify potential issues at an early stage, when treatment is most effective and survival rates are significantly higher.

Routine screenings also offer peace of mind, especially if you’re at increased risk due to factors like tobacco use, alcohol consumption, or a family history of cancer. Our compassionate team ensures a thorough yet comfortable experience, so you can stay informed and in control of your oral health.

Causes and Risk Factors of Oral Cancer

Understanding the risk factors behind oral cancer is essential in taking preventive action. At Gentle Dental, our oral cancer screening in Boston focuses on early detection, especially for individuals at elevated risk.

Highest Risk:

  • Tobacco use (smoking or smokeless)
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Combined use of tobacco and alcohol
  • Prior history of oral or other head and neck cancers

High Risk:

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, especially HPV-16
  • Prolonged sun exposure (linked to lip cancer)
  • Age 55 and older
  • Male gender (oral cancer is more common in men)

Increased Risk:

  • Poor nutrition (especially low fruit and vegetable intake)
  • Weakened immune system
  • Chronic irritation from rough teeth or ill-fitting dentures
  • Family history of cancer

Knowing these risks helps you make informed decisions. If you fall into any of these categories, scheduling an oral cancer screening in Boston could be a life-saving step.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer

Recognizing the early symptoms of oral cancer can make a significant difference in outcomes. At Gentle Dental, we encourage patients to be aware of warning signs and visit us for an oral cancer screening in Boston if they experience any of the following:

  • Persistent sores or ulcers in the mouth that don't heal
  • Red or white patches on the gums, tongue, or lining of the mouth
  • A lump or thickening in the cheek
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw or tongue
  • Numbness or pain in the mouth or lips
  • A sore throat or a feeling that something is caught in the throat
  • Voice changes or hoarseness that persists
  • Swelling in the jaw or neck

These symptoms don't always mean cancer, but having them checked early with a professional oral cancer screening in Boston can help rule out serious concerns or begin treatment promptly.

How is the Oral Cancer Screening Performed?

At Gentle Dental, an oral cancer screening in Boston is a simple, quick, and painless part of your routine dental visit. Our trained dental professionals conduct a thorough visual and physical exam of your mouth, head, and neck to identify any unusual signs.

Here's what to expect during the screening:

  • Visual Examination: We inspect your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, roof and floor of your mouth, and throat for red or white patches, sores, or unusual swelling.
  • Physical Palpation: We gently feel the jaw, neck, and lymph nodes for lumps or abnormalities.
  • Optional Advanced Tools: In some cases, we may use special lights or rinses to help detect suspicious tissues not visible to the naked eye.

The entire process typically takes just a few minutes and can be a powerful step in identifying early signs of oral cancer.

What to Expect During Your Visit

When you come to Gentle Dental for an oral cancer screening in Boston, you can expect a comfortable, respectful, and efficient experience. We understand that any screening can feel intimidating, so our team takes the time to walk you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

You’ll be welcomed by our friendly staff, and your screening will be performed in a relaxed environment as part of your regular dental exam. The screening is non-invasive and typically takes just a few minutes. There’s no special preparation needed, and most patients experience little to no discomfort.

We prioritize your peace of mind—if we spot anything unusual, we’ll discuss the next steps clearly and compassionately. Our goal is to help you stay informed and healthy with proactive care.
