The Health Benefits of Braces

Straight teeth not only help improve self-esteem and confidence but also provide many oral health benefits. When teeth become crowded or improperly spaced, it can cause difficulty in maintaining proper oral hygiene and increases the risk of gum disease and tooth loss.

Crowded or crooked teeth can wear unevenly faster than usual, causing significant risk to the tooth structure. Properly aligned teeth not only create a better bite but also reduce stress and strain that can cause headaches and jaw pain and the need for additional dental care.

Braces correct orthodontic issues such as:

  • Crowded or crooked teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Problems with the bite, including crossbite, open bite, underbite and overbite

Common health benefits of braces and adequately aligned teeth:

  • Ability to chew food properly
  • Improve speech impairment
  • Easier oral hygiene
  • Lowered risk of cavities and periodontal disease (gum disease)
  • Less grinding and risk of chipped teeth
  • Reduced risk of injury from protruding teeth

Gentle Dental Orthodontists Offer Different Types of Braces

Traditional Metal
Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces. Patients who choose traditional braces, get metal, high-grade stainless-steel bands, and wires that wrap around the molars, with brackets attached to the front of the teeth.

Next, a metal wire called an archwire attaches to the brackets to help correctly align the teeth.

During treatment, patients may experience different types of archwires, elastic rubber bands, metal ties, and other clasps. Kids love to choose bands in many colors from black to blue or hot pink!

Clear Braces /
Aligners

Clear braces are an aesthetic alternative to metal braces, and their popularity is growing.

With clear braces, patients are provided with clear plastic aligners that often resemble mouth guards. While clear braces can be effective, the treatment time is not as quick as traditional metal braces.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are like traditional metal braces; however, they are tooth colored brackets instead of metal, which provides patients with a less noticeable form of treatment.

Ceramic braces use the same elements, such as the metal stainless-steel bands wrapped around the molars and brackets attached to the front teeth.

However, these brackets differ from traditional braces because they are tooth colored clear and blend well with the teeth and not as noticeable.

Lingual Braces

Similar to traditional braces, Lingual braces are made of brackets and wires. However, instead of attaching to the front of the teeth, they are positioned in the back of the teeth. They are more discreet and less visible than traditional braces.

Lingual braces are a great solution for crowded teeth, over and under bite issues, and spacing or gaps. However, people with extreme overbite conditions may not be a good candidate as the overbite may put too much pressure on the brackets.

Invisalign

Invisalign is the most advanced removable appliances option to straighten teeth even over orthodontic braces.

Invisalign is customized specifically for everyone. Each treatment plan is custom made by your orthodontist and gives you the appearance of not wearing braces. No metal, no wires.

Also, with Invisalign, you can remove your aligners when you are eating or completing your oral hygiene routine.

Orthodontic Treatments and Braces for All Ages

Gentle Dental offers braces for kids and adults! Contact us today for a consultation.

Typically, orthodontic treatment is no different for adults than it would be for children. However, because adult teeth have stopped growing, and are in their permanent position, it may take a bit longer for treatment than with a child. Depending on your specific case, you can expect to wear your braces or Invisalign aligners for any time from 6 months to 18 months or more.

As per the American Association of Orthodontists guidelines, Gentle Dental recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. With early evaluation and diagnosis, children can achieve optimal orthodontic results benefits to avoid surgery or other complications in the future.

A consultation with an orthodontist will determine if you’re a candidate for braces or orthodontic treatment. Some patients may be required to complete other dental treatment prior to getting braces. Your orthodontist can recommend the type of braces that will help you achieve the best results.

We accept most dental insurance plans and offer third party financing. From routine dental care to cosmetic dentistry and orthodontic services, Gentle Dental provides all phases of dental care.
