Tooth extractions are generally done by an Oral Surgeon, also called a Maxillofacial Surgeon.  Oral Surgeons complete additional years of surgical and anesthesia training in a hospital residency program after completing dental school.  Our Oral Surgeons are all board-certified and have completed training in a variety of dental surgical techniques including tooth extractions, wisdom teeth removal and bone grafting, and work with issues and diseases of the gums, teeth and mouth.  Our oral surgeons use anesthesia and sedation to make you are as comfortable as possible during your surgery, and will work with your general dentist to ensure you get the best care possible.

Wisdom Teeth

One of the most common types of oral surgery relate to wisdom teeth removal. Wisdom teeth often develop problems that require their removal. When the jaw isn’t large enough to accommodate wisdom teeth, they can become impacted (unable to come in or misaligned). Wisdom teeth may grow sideways, emerge only part way from the gum or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone.

Extraction of wisdom teeth is generally recommended when:

  • Wisdom teeth only partially erupt. This leaves an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection. Pain, swelling, jaw stiffness and general illness can result.
  • There is a chance that poorly aligned wisdom teeth will damage adjacent teeth.
  • A cyst (fluid-filled sac) forms, destroying surrounding structures such as bone or tooth roots.
