As always, I received an excellent cleaning from Hygienist, Jessica Ross, along with a thorough explanation of anything she observes. In addition to her dental care proficiency, her wonderful good nature and humor make my visit enjoyable and constructive.

I was able to get an appointment the same week even though they’re super busy. Selda did my dental cleaning and did an excellent job. I had a ton of staining from coffee that she took the extra time to completely get rid of! She had an excellent bedside manner and didn’t rush through things. They have an orthodontist that works there on Mondays too which is nice. They accept most insurance companies too. I was able to add on a fluoride treatment for $45 (insurance doesn’t cover this) to further protect my teeth too. Will continue to come back!

Friendly and knowledgeable staff explained all of the procedures and steps. The attending Doctor was professional, kind, and patient given dentists are most certainly not in my comfort zone. Would highly recommend across the board.

Preliminary Examinations Before Tooth Extraction in Boston

At Gentle Dental, every tooth extraction in Boston begins with a careful and thorough preliminary examination. Our experienced team uses advanced diagnostic tools, including digital X-rays and comprehensive oral evaluations, to assess the condition of your teeth and surrounding tissues.

Reasons Tooth Extractions May Be Necessary

Tooth extractions are often recommended when:

  • A tooth is severely decayed or damaged beyond repair
  • Gum disease has led to significant bone loss around the tooth
  • Wisdom teeth are impacted or misaligned
  • There is an infection that cannot be resolved with root canal treatment
  • Teeth are overcrowded, especially before orthodontic care

Understanding the Cause

Before recommending tooth extraction in Boston, our dental professionals take time to identify the underlying cause and explore all possible treatment options. If extraction is the best course, we’ll guide you through each step with a personalized care plan focused on your comfort and recovery.

Tooth Extraction Procedure at Gentle Dental Boston

At Gentle Dental, we make every tooth extraction in Boston as smooth, safe, and stress-free as possible. Whether you're dealing with pain, infection, or impacted teeth, our skilled team ensures you receive the right type of care based on your individual needs.

About the Procedure

Tooth extraction is a routine dental procedure used to remove a tooth that's damaged, decayed, or causing alignment issues. Before proceeding, our dentists will thoroughly examine your case and determine the best approach to ensure a comfortable experience with minimal disruption to your oral health.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

The process begins with local anesthesia to numb the area. Once you're comfortable, the dentist gently loosens and removes the tooth using specialized instruments. The procedure typically takes less than an hour, and you'll receive clear post-operative instructions to aid healing.

Is Tooth Extraction a Major Surgery?

Not always. Most tooth extractions in Boston are simple procedures. However, if the tooth is impacted, broken at the gum line, or not fully erupted (like wisdom teeth), a surgical extraction may be required. In such cases, the procedure may involve a small incision in the gum and sometimes sectioning the tooth into smaller pieces.

Types of Tooth Extraction

  • Simple Extraction: Performed on visible teeth, typically under local anesthesia. The tooth is gently loosened and lifted out.
  • Surgical Extraction: Required for teeth that are not easily accessible. This type may involve gum incisions or tooth sectioning and is often done with sedation or stronger anesthesia.

Sectioning a Tooth

For particularly stubborn or fractured teeth, our dentists may use a technique called sectioning. This involves cutting the tooth into smaller pieces for easier, less traumatic removal—helping preserve surrounding bone and soft tissue.

Aftercare & Recovery Following Tooth Extraction in Boston

At Gentle Dental, we believe that proper care after your tooth extraction in Boston is just as important as the procedure itself. Our team is committed to guiding you through a smooth recovery with detailed instructions and personalized support.

After Tooth Extraction

Following the procedure, you may experience mild swelling, bleeding, or discomfort—this is completely normal. To promote healing and avoid complications:

  • Bite gently on the gauze pad to reduce bleeding
  • Apply a cold compress to manage swelling
  • Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using straws for the first 24 hours
  • Stick to soft foods and stay well hydrated
  • Refrain from smoking or strenuous activity for a few days

Most patients begin to feel better within 48–72 hours and recover fully within a week or two.

Personalized Aftercare

Every patient’s recovery is unique, which is why our Boston team provides personalized aftercare instructions tailored to your specific extraction type—whether simple or surgical. We’re also available for follow-up appointments to monitor healing and address any concerns.

If you're undergoing tooth extraction in Boston, Gentle Dental will be with you from diagnosis to recovery.

Why Tooth Extraction May Be Needed

At Gentle Dental, we prioritize saving your natural teeth, but in certain situations, tooth extraction in Boston becomes necessary to preserve your oral and overall health. Below are the most common reasons for recommending an extraction:

Damage Due to Decay

Severe tooth decay can destroy a tooth from the inside out. When the decay reaches the pulp or compromises the tooth structure beyond repair, extraction is often the safest and most effective solution to prevent infection and relieve pain.

Periodontal Disease

Advanced periodontal (gum) disease can erode the bone and soft tissues that support your teeth. When this damage is irreversible, extraction may be the best option to prevent the spread of infection and prepare the area for future restorative care.

Impacted Teeth

Teeth that are unable to fully erupt—most commonly wisdom teeth—can cause pain, crowding, and infection. Surgical removal of impacted teeth helps protect adjacent teeth and reduces the risk of cysts or gum complications.
